Melody Guitar Book 4: Free Video Lessons

Click here to order your copy of Melody Guitar 4, and check out the free videos below!

Melody Guitar Books 1-4 focus on learning to read and play melody lines in standard music notation. Melody Guitar 1 starts you off learning notes on the first three strings and music reading basics, and Melody Guitar 2 covers strings 4-6. Melody Guitar 3 builds on Melody Guitar Books 1 and 2. Melody Guitar 4 shows you how to read and play melodies up the neck. The first main section of the book focuses on playing in 5th position, with the first finger at the 5th fret. In the sections that follow, you'll play the same melodies and exercises in 7th and 2nd position. In the final section of Melody Guitar 4, you'll get to decide where on the fretboard to play the melodies.

You should start with Melody Guitar 1 if you're a new guitarist or if you're just getting into reading standard notation. It's a short book, and it's free! Click here to download Melody Guitar 1 and watch the videos.

If you're just getting started on guitar, you should also check out my Rhythm Guitar series, which focuses on chords, strumming, and fingerstyle patterns.

Lesson 1: Fretboard Layout (pages 3-5)
An overview of the fretboard. You'll become very familiar with the fretboard as you work through this book.

Lesson 2: Fretboard Memory Exercises (pages 6-8)

Use these exercises to help speed up your learning of the fretboard. You don't need to master these exercises to move on to the next section. Instead, work through the book, but do these memory exercises until you feel you don't need them anymore.

Lesson 3: Scales Overview (pages 9-12)

Although not an absolute requirement, the exercises in Melody Guitar 4 will be much easier if you are familiar with scales.

Lesson 4: Intro to 5th Position (pages 13-14)

This lesson starts off with a 5-note C major scale in 5th position and then moves on to several 5-note 5th position drills.

Lesson 5: 5-Note 5th Position Melodies (page 15)

Two simple 5-note songs in 5th position: Jingle Bells and Ode to Joy. You'll find that the melodies in this book are generally easier then those in Melody Guitar 3 so that you can focus more easily on learning the fretboard.

Lesson 6: 5th Position, Adding 1st String (pages 16-17)

In this lesson, you'll add 1st string A, B, and C to your 5th position notes. Includes several short 5th position drills.

Lesson 7: 5th Position Octave Melodies (page 18)

Two songs in 5th position, each with a one-octave range that include the new 5th position notes you learned on page 16.
